ROAD TO REDEMPTION
Canada’s results at the Juvenile Women’s Pan American Championships September 11th 2008, by Brian Hayes

The scores were:

Brazil-Canada 46-15 Chile-Canada 24-22 Uruguay-Canada 36-24 Paraguay-Canada 25-24 Argentina-Canada 41-15

Although the last two games were very close, both were possible wins as the girls came back quite solidly in each. In the first one, even the PATHF supervisor at the table admitted that the ref had a loss of concentration in the last minute and missed a sure 7 m and two minute penalty, this would have given us another point and a man advantage to tie/win the game. And yes we would have scored the seven (in one game Caroline Choquette was 9 for 9 at the line) and then we probably would have at least tied after that as our defense was shutting them out with aggressive play. Instead-- a two point loss.

In the next game a questionable call in the last few minutes allowed Paraguay to have possession of a ball that had been outside the line, in fact it bounced outside the line before the player brought it back in.

So both these games were possible wins. Under the gun the players picked up their game and played much more aggressively and more positively than they would at the beginning of the game.

One of the conclusions after these two games was that there is a problem of getting to the net and shooting at the beginning of games when the opponents are aggressive teams with pressure defenses and fast break offenses. However when Canada is against the wall, they dig down and play like a different team. The defenses of these teams are very aggressive, strong and very physical—and the refs play it that way. The number of turnovers was high, but our shooting percentages were quite high (in one game 82%). When we shoot we can score, but not enough shots are being taken. When the team started performing as expected by driving the net more, shooting more, shifting faster on defense, we would be on an even keel with the opponent, and in some cases steadily gaining the advantage.

Here are some paraphrased quotes from the Alberta Handball blog that the players have written:

Vs Argentina:

Our game plan was to start off with a 3-3 defense which we did quite well on as we brought tactics to the game that we had discussed earlier in the morning. On offence we moved the ball pretty well, but did not have a high shooting efficiency creating more fast breaks for them. We got down earlier in the game, which led us to rush our offense leading to more turnovers and more counter attacks. At the half we were down by twelve. The second half game plan was pretty much the same. Very proud with the way we played today---just not at the level of Argentina.

Vs Chile:

We gained a good lead of 6-1, but slipped to a tie of 12-12 at half time. For the first 15 minutes after the break the game went back and forth. Chile pulled away and with six minutes left we were down by six. We changed defense and pushed real hard and with real passion we scored 4 unanswered goals with some huge saves from Jaelyn to get us back in the game. We fought hard but not in time; we lost the game 24-22.

Mike Nahmiash:

The “Road to Redemption” was a success in my opinion; we have come from losing to teams by 40 to losing to teams by 1 or 2. For example, two years ago we lost to Paraguay 42-6 and yesterday we lost to them 25-24. So we have caught up and have one year to reach our goal to go to the World Championships. Can it be done? I think so but it is always up to the girls. As a coach I am very proud of this group for all the dedication they have shown and how they have become so close as a team.

Brian Hayes:

I found this group to quite possibly be the best that I had worked with in 38 years of teaching and coaching. They were always upbeat, positive, cohesive, eager to learn and work and demonstrated maturity beyond their years. As the coaches said, this is an easy job when you have a group like this.

Canada should be proud of this group of women; I know that Mike Nahmiash, Stephane Berteau, Janie Barrette and I were.

The young canadians almost perfect in France
August 24th 2008

The rest of the tour of the Juvenile Canadian Women's Team in France was very succesful. They finished their tour with a record of 8 wins, 1 tie and 1 lost. This was a huge improvement for the young players of Canada, because in Decembre during the Junior tour, they had a lot more difficulties against these french teams. ''This was a important preparation for us, mentioned head coach Michael Nahmiash, with 18 practices and 10 games in 14 days, this allows us to set our defense, fast breaks and offense systems.'' Now, we will see if these young canadians will be able to transform their positive experience in France in victories in Brazil.
